Nirvana Reunites for Surprise FireAid Set with St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett, and Violet Grohl

Here’s some news we can all be happy about, the surviving members of Nirvana—Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear—staged a surprise reunion at the FireAid benefit concert in Inglewood, California last night and it RUUUULED. The grunge icons were joined by a powerhouse lineup of guest vocalists, including St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, Joan Jett, and Grohl’s daughter, Violet, each taking the stage to rip it up for a good cause.

The Hall of Fame era version of the group kicked off their set with St. Vincent’s raw and commanding rendition of “Breed,” followed by Kim Gordon tearing through a visceral performance of “School.” Joan Jett—always a pleasure to see—brought her signature edge to “Territorial Pissings,” sending the crowd into a frenzy. But it was Violet Grohl’s haunting, ethereal take on “All Apologies” that left the audience stunned. The entire performance is profoundly moving. It’s worth noting that this is the first time that Dave Grohl has been seen publicly since his the announcement of the birth of a daughter outside of his marriage. Following that announcement, the Foo Fighters canceled their headlining set at the Southside Music Festival, and they’ve also reportedly scrapped plans for a 2025 tour.

FireAid, organized to support Los Angeles-area wildfire relief efforts, assembled an eclectic and star-studded lineup featuring Billie Eilish, Green Day, Dr. Dre, and Joni Mitchell. But it was the unexpected Nirvana reunion that stole the spotlight. Check out the entire performance below, it’s a shredder for the ages.
