Director David Lynch Says That He’s Likely Retiring

It’s a sad day for sickos, freaks, and cinephiles everywhere as legendary director David Lynch says that he’s probably done with directing due to his struggle with emphysema after decades of smoking.

In an interview with Sight & Sound, the 78-year-old director explained:

I’ve gotten emphysema from smoking for so long and so I’m homebound whether I like it or not. It would be very bad for me to get sick, even with a cold.

The director continued, noting that he “can only walk a short distance” before he’s too tired to move. Lynch goes on to say that he’s probably done with filmmaking unless he can direct remotely. Although he said, “I wouldn’t like that so much.”

Lynch’s most recent major project was Twin Peaks: The Return for Showtime, and prior to that his most recent film was 2006’s Inland Empire, an all-timer in the “Isn’t Hollywood Weird” canon.
