Alamo Drafthouse Announces Layoffs

On Tuesday, Alamo Drafthouse announced a new round of layoffs. This devastating news comes seven months after Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired Alamo, the Austin-based company that runs 35 cinemas across the country.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the layoffs are both on the corporate side, with nine percent of employees fired as a way to “ensure more effective business.” On the other side of the coin, there are an unspecified number of employees to be laid off by Alamo in what they expect to be a slow few months at the box office. An insider told THR that the layoffs in the brick and mortar section of the company are made up of seasonal part-timers, and something that occurs annually following a busy holiday season. However, employees on Reddit have noted that this year the layoffs are different, with close to 30 people being let go in some locations.

One employee wrote on Reddit:

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema just laid off a bunch of employees across the whole company with zero notice or precedent in the name of the upcoming season being slow and, in some cases, ‘corporate restructuring. Apparently over 30 people at my location will lose their jobs.

While the first quarter of the year is always the slowest for the film industry (save for the release of Captain America Brave New World in February), 2025 promises to have a slew of big name titles like SupermanMission: Impossible – The Final ReckoningThe Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Jurassic World Rebirth

According to THR and former employees, those who have been laid-off from Alamo were told to reapply for their jobs in the spring when things pick back up.
