Toto’s Steve Lukather Calls Rivers Cuomo “Weird”

Now this is the kind of beef we need in 2025. Back in 2018, Weezer covered Toto’s mega-hit “Africa” following a lengthy and unhinged fan campaign in 2017. The band gave into the noise and scored an honest to goodness hit with the cover song. Toto responded by covering the band’s 2001 hit, “Hashpipe.” That’s all great! Very cool and totally fine. When asked about Weezer’s cover of “Africa,” the band gave it a “B++,” an insane thing to say about a band who made you relevant in a new decade/century, but okay whatever. ANYWAY.

Nearly a decade later (ugh), Toto’s frontman, Steve Lukather, is coming out swinging. While chatting on the New & Improved podcast with Matt Pinfield, Lukather ripped into Rivers Cuomo, the lead singer and King Weirdo of Weezer saying:

I think he did it to take the piss out of it and it blew up in his face. Now he’s gotta play it every night! I tried to reach out to this guy and be friendly and it just got weird. I don’t want to get into it, but peace and love. It was good for them, it was good for us. God bless.
