Pavements: The Mind-Bending Movie About Pavement Finally Gets a Release Date

Pavements, director Alex Ross Perry’s all over the place movie about Pavement, has been in the works for years at this point. Part biopic, part documentary, and somewhat art experiment, the film sounds like a dream for film nerds and indie rock heads. So far all we've seen of the film is a clip and a teaser for Range Life, the standard biopic-within-a-movie that's a part of an elaborate joke that's also completely functional on its own as a standard piece of visual storytelling. Now, Pavements finally has a national theatrical release date and a somewhat normal trailer.

Pavements includes all sorts of fascinating stuff, including footage and behind-the-scenes stuff from Slanted! Enchanted!, the Pavement jukebox musical that Alex Ross Perry staged for three days in 2022. The Pavements cast includes Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman, Tim Heidecker, and Griffin Newman of Blank Check and Beware the Gonzo fame. In the trailer, we see those people playing their characters, talking about Pavement, and talking about how weird it is to be playing people who are in or associated with Pavement. Normal. There’s also recent live footage of the band’s reunion shows, and Pavement members interacting with the people who play them onscreen. It's a lot. We're excited. Check it out below.

The New York premiere for Pavements will take place on 5/2 at Film Forum, and there will be opening-weekend events with Alex Ross Perry, Steve West, Mark Ibold, and cast members Michael Esper and Kathryn Gallagher. The Los Angeles premiere is happening 5/9, and then the movie opens in theaters nationwide 6/6.
